Conservation Restoration Technician

A Rocha Ontario is developing a variety of nature conservation initiatives. The Conservation & Restoration Technician will contribute to these projects by carrying out the tasks of monitoring, restoration and property upkeep at Cedar Haven and other sites. This may involve planting native species, removing invasives, assisting in nest box installation and monitoring and contributing to restoration projects for a number of taxa (e.g., plants, birds, amphibians). Given the community based nature of A Rocha, the employee may be asked to help assist in leading volunteers and hosting site visitors for events and workshops. The Conservation and Restoration Technician will report to the Conservation Coordinator.

Two positions available: (May 5 – June 27 & June 2 – July 25)

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has some prior experience in restoration and/or monitoring work. They have strong or developing field skills in data collection and management, as well as the ability to use hand tools and motorized equipment (e.g., lawn mower) to complete restoration work. They may have a background in biology, environmental science, ecosystem restoration, ecology, forestry, horticulture or a related field. This role requires a detail-oriented candidate who has the ability to take initiative, work independently and stay organized. This role also requires strong species identification skills, particularly for birds and fish. The ideal candidate has a passion for the natural world and shares A Rocha’s vision, commitments and core values.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement habitat conservation and restoration projects on site, including planting native species and removing invasives
  • Assist with nest box program (building, site assessment, and installation) for at-risk bird species
  • Support avian and fish species monitoring and identification
  • Maintain trails, lawn, and outdoor teaching spaces on site in an environmentally sensitive manner (e.g. mowing, trimming, planting, watering)
  • Work with local team to set conservation priorities and share responsibilities for the site
  • Take part in team meetings and learning sessions
  • Welcome site visitors and introduce them to the property

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Embodies A Rocha Canada’s Vision, Commitments and Core Values
  • Education/experience in ecosystem restoration, biology, ecology, environmental science or a related field
  • Proven ability to take initiative, manage details, and complete tasks in timely manner
  • Track record exhibiting ability to collaborate with a team and communicate with the public
  • Experience with safe operation of hand tools and powered lawn and garden equipment
  • Proficiency in species identification for avian (both sight and sound) and fish species is an asset
  • Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check required
  • Commitment to learning and growth
  • Access to reliable transportation to and from the Cedar Haven Eco-Centre
  • Eligible to participate in Canada Summer Jobs program (Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person with official refugee status who is 15-30 years of age and legally entitled to work in Canada)

Hours of Work & Compensation

  • Workweek: 35 hours/week, Monday to Friday (with occasional weekend events)
  • Work Term: May 5 – June 27 & July 7 – August 29, 2025 (depending on funding & program needs)
  • Wages: $17.50/hour
