Lead Pastor

The Lead Pastor is one of the elders of the church and, as such, works collaboratively with the elder board to provide leadership and direction to the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church (PFBC) membership & affiliates to ensure that church outworkings demonstrate congruency with the church’s belief statement that “God is real, and that changes everything”. This individual is responsible for monitoring ministry effectiveness in keeping with this belief statement. The lead pastor role focuses on engaging, equipping, and empowering the staff/volunteer team and congregants to work together.

Position accountability:

Leadership Structure: The Lead Pastor is accountable to the PFBC Board of Elders. All staff members are accountable to the Lead Pastor.

Attributes, Qualifications and Character of the Lead Pastor:

  • Has the spiritual qualifications of an elder. (1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9)
  • Believes, upholds and teaches the Statement of Faith of PFBC.
  • Clearly articulates this call to ministry, noting that others affirm this call on his life. (Isaiah 6:8)
  • Strongly senses the call of God upon his life to a ministry at PFBC.
  • Is a man of prayer who follows the Holy Spirit’s leading in his life and his ministry.
  • Lives a Spirit-filled life, giving tangible evidence of the fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22)
  • Demonstrates and fosters the biblical values of grace, humility, hospitality, transparency and accountability. (2 Timothy 2:22-26)
  • Pursues grace-infused godliness and encourages others to do the same. (2 Thessalonians 2:16,17)
  • Has a generous spirit and encourages a spirit of generosity in others. (2 Corinthians 9:10-12)
  • Demonstrates spiritual courage infused with Godly joy and gentleness. (2 Timothy 1:7, Philippians 4:4,5)
  • Has authentic empathy, born out of victory over hardship and testing in his own life, ministry and Christ’s example. He has the ability to communicate God’s faithfulness through difficulty, spurs others on to believe and trust God for victory within the circumstances of their own lives. (Romans 5:3-5, Romans 12:15)
  • Understands, practices, and promotes the value of Sabbath Rest and takes time for personal refueling. (Exodus 20:8-11)
  • Has supportive family members who wholeheartedly endorse his ministry.
  • Can maintain a balance between family, work and personal wellness.
  • With the support of the elders, deacons, and Godly wisdom, will guard his spouse (and children) from the stress of ministry pressure. (1 Timothy 5:8)
  • Gladly gives God credit for his success in life and ministry, rejoicing in all things and leveraging every opportunity to honour God and point people to Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 6:20)
  • A Godly man, who prioritizes the mission and the good of the church, a servant leader who leads the team of pastors/ elders, deacons, directors, staff, and church body by a Christ-like example. (Matthew 23:11,12)

Competencies:

  • Leads in an articulate application of Biblical principles through the expository preaching of God’s word. (2 Timothy 2:15)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Has experience working with a multi-staffed church.
  • Proficient in organizational and administrative tasks.
  • A wise steward of personal and church resources. (Colossians 3:23)

Pastoral Shepherding: In accordance with Scripture, PFBC strives to maintain a plurality of pastors, or elders, as the office is known in the Scriptures. Each pastor/elder will be equal to every other pastor/elder and shall together share equally the responsibility of shepherding every member of the church.  The Lead Pastor will be the liaison between elders, deacons and staff.

  • A visionary leader who can describe previous ministry success in stretching and guiding believers to be mature in their faith, to serve in ministry, and to grow in giving. He is able to mobilize, empower, and equip God’s people to carry out the gospel vision God has given to us for the sake of His glory. (Hebrews 13:17)
  • Is the lead communicator of vision, values, and direction for the church.
  • Develop other capable teachers and preachers of God’s word in the church.
  • Able to lead the church in providing pastoral care to the congregation. (1 Peter 5:2,3)
  • A leader by example in actively seeking God’s direction for our church, its members, and himself through prayer and Bible study. (John 13:15)
  • Experience in equipping and encouraging God’s people in their spiritual development and growth through prayer and Bible study. (Ephesians 4:12)

Key Position Responsibilities: 

  • To be the primary preaching pastor of PFBC.
  • To oversee the teaching and preaching that occur at PFBC.
  • Coordinates the pulpit ministry with the pastoral staff and Director of Worship and oversees the ordinances of the Lord’s Table and Baptism.
  • To work with the elders and deacons in the hiring of all new staff to ensure a culture fit with PFBC, as well as managing changes to the organizational structure and position descriptions.
  • To be the key voice in setting the leadership culture at PFBC.
  • Will be responsible for knowing the overall scope and activity of all ministry areas and giving advice where needed. He will not be required to administer every area but should trust and empower the ministry staff, deacons, and ministry lay leaders to thrive and flourish in their respective areas.
  • Participates in identifying and developing the next generation of leaders in the church. (Psalm 78:4)
  • Leads the church in equipping the people of God for outreach and sharing the gospel. (Mark 16:15)
  • Promotes and supports both local and global missions. (Matthew 28: 18-20)

Professional Qualifications:

  • Preferably has a Master’s Degree in Theology, Biblical Studies, or a related field from an accredited institution, and 10 years’ experience in pastoral ministry. A candidate registered in a recognized program may be considered.
  • Proven experience in pastoral ministry, spiritual leadership, and community engagement.

Terms of Employment: 

  • This is a full-time position and has a salary range of $83,000 to $98,000 annually, dependent on education, experience and expertise.
  • A specific package, including benefits, will be offered also, based on the candidate’s education, experience and expertise.
  • Ordination or licensing as a pastor under Fellowship Pacific will be required upon employment.
  • This position is subject to two performance reviews per year conducted by the elders and deacons and on the agreement to abide by the current PFBC Employee Handbook.
  • Complete a Criminal Records Check for PFBC.
